keeping my grandpa's story alive
When I reflect on resilience, unconditional love, and unwavering faith, I think of Daddy Ji—my grandfather, my hero, and my best friend when I had no friends.
Daddy Ji—my grandfather, my hero, and my best friend- carried the weight of the world on his shoulders but always found time for his family, especially for me.
One of my favourite memories of Daddy Ji is our late-night adventures. Long after the rest of the house fell asleep, we played card games or Ludo together. Despite his long days, he indulged me with laughter and energy. Those nights felt magical, just the two of us against the board or cards. I often felt guilty for keeping him up, but he never complained; his joy came from my happiness.
As a child, I slept beside Daddy Ji while he shared stories from his life, especially about the India & Pakistan Partition of 1947. He recounted leaving everything behind—the land and home—to ensure his family's survival. His voice trembled when discussing the fear of those days but steadied when he spoke of his faith, saying, “Rabb de Bharose,” meaning “trust in God,” we survived. His anecdotes about fleeing violence and losing family still resonate with me and I feel like it’s also a way for me to learn about my ancestral trauma.
Daddy Ji’s life exemplified hard work and devotion. He cared for my great-grandpa and took on household tasks with love and dignity, never seeking recognition. From him, I learned selflessness, resilience, and the importance of living with purpose. He showed me that being tired is no excuse for not being present for loved ones
Though Daddy Ji is no longer here, his spirit lives on in the stories he shared and the lessons he taught. I miss him deeply—his laughter and love—but I find comfort in his meaningful legacy of love and resilience.
Thank you, Daddy Ji, for everything: for the sleepless nights spent playing games, for the wisdom you shared, and for being my best friend. You were not just a survivor of history but also a creator of joy and hope for our family.
As I move forward, I carry you with me in everything I do. Your lessons guide me, your stories inspire me, and your love strengthens me.
Rest easy, Daddy Ji.
I know Waheguru Ji has a special place for souls like yours.
Until we meet again.
Can you share his stories of the partition?
