What inspired me to study journalism?
Embarking on a Journey of Storytelling and Change: My Path in Journalism
As I find myself at CP24 Breakfast with Pooja Handa, reflecting on my choice to pursue journalism for my undergraduate degree, the question lingers: Why is journalism amidst a sea of other academic avenues? While it's evident that my passion for photography and writing steers me in this direction, the allure of this field extends beyond those artistic passions. My journey is an ongoing narrative, a story in the making.
Merging the realms of photojournalism, writing, and broadcast journalism is no simple feat. Yet, within this blog, I'm fervently attempting to do just that. Allow me to introduce my parallel endeavor – a book titled "Second Chance." Through this work, I invite you to share in my pursuit of redemption. Moreover, my aspiration transcends personal growth; I am striving to become a trailblazing Sikh journalist in Canada, complete with a turban and beard.
Invariably, the question arises: What inspires me? Some may challenge the notion of Sikh journalists, even contending that journalism is a domain exclusive to certain demographics. With a steadfast grin, I assert that storytelling is the very essence of my existence. Often, truths remain obscured, concealed beneath layers of misinformation. It's my commitment to unearth these truths, even if it means laying my own life on the line.
The genesis of my journey into journalism stems from a crucial impetus – the unjust surveillance of my community. Decades of unfounded beliefs linking us to tragic events like 9/11 have cast a shadow over us. However, it's time to relinquish the past and fix our gaze on the future. The onus to transform this flawed world isn't borne by an individual alone; collective momentum is imperative to shatter established norms and embrace change. Hate thrives on ignorance; it is only through education and awareness that it can be eradicated.
A beacon of hope shines in organizations like KhalsaAid, a humanitarian entity that operates in the shadows of crises, extending assistance to those in need. Although its contributions are profound, global recognition remains elusive. Countless volunteers, risking their lives, provide aid to Syrian refugees in the heart of Syria itself.
"Recognize the whole human race as one."
- Guru Gobind Singh Ji
Embedded within this motto is a profound truth. Assistance will always flow to those weathering storms of any kind. Despite our shared humanity, jealousy often mars our perception of each other's achievements.
"The world is a drama staged in a dream."
- Guru Nanak
My mission resonates deeply with these words. My purpose is to rouse people from the reverie of life's staged drama, awakening them to the underlying reality. My journey is a call to action, a quest to challenge the boundaries of storytelling and to bring about positive change.
